Royal Wedding Watching Breakfast

I've shared this recipe before on The District Domestic, but it's one of my favorites and will be perfect for the Royal Wedding Watching Party I'm attending at 3am!  If ginger and pecans aren't your thing, try my recipe for Chocolate Scones.  Read more about the Royal Wedding food on Epicurious.com.

Ginger Pecan Scones 3 3/4 cups flour 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 cup sugar 3 tbsp baking powder 1/2 cup butter, cut into small pieces 1/4 cup chopped crystallized ginger 1/4 cup chopped pecans 1 1/4 cups whole milk

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

In the food processor, combine the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder.  Add the butter and process until the butter has been cut into the flour mixture and you can still see little pea-sized pieces.  Add the ginger, pecans and milk.  Process only until the mixture comes together.

Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface and flatten to 1 inch thick.  Use a cookie cutter or biscuit cutter to make into rounds.  Brush the tops with milk and sprinkle with sanding sugar, if you like.

Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are lightly golden brown.

Serve with whipping cream and fresh fruit, or just dig in with a little butter right when they come out of the oven.

Enjoy!

Mardi Gras - a little late...

Better late, than never :) NewOrleansI surprised my husband with a trip to New Orleans the first weekend in February, which happened to be the start of the Mardi Gras celebration in the Crescent City!  From fried oysters with brie at Clancy's to Muffulettas at Cochon Butcher to a new retail vendor for Haute Papier in The Stationer New Orleans to macarons and king's cake at Sucre to the irresistible beignets at Cafe du Monde, it was a wonderful glutenous and relaxing trip!

Happy St. Patty's Day!

guinessfloat2Now that’s a novel idea! Thank you Martha Stewart! Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with the perfect dessert… An Ice Cream Float. Make it just like your mom used to, just substitute a bottle of Guinness for that root beer. Fill a large glass with 2 scoops of your favorite vanilla ice cream, then slowly pour the stout over the ice cream. Enjoy!

Sprinkles Georgetown!

Yes, the cupcake “revolution” is getting old, but this is the real deal… Sprinkles Cupcakes… the ORIGINAL cupcake bakery!  It’s arrived here in DC – dangerously down the street from the Haute Papier design studio… but not far enough that the walk down there will burn off the calories consumed by even one cupcake (as if I am actually able to have that kind of self-restraint!)! We were able to get a sneak peek and ridiculous amount of tasting earlier this week at a preview for business owners in Georgetown and we’re beyond smitten with the deliciousness of the cake!  It’s perfectly crumbly with so much more flavor than another cupcakes shop in Georgetown, whose name we’ll leave unmentioned, but irritates the heck out of my husband – if only because its customers have no sense of the difference between the street and sidewalk as they stand googlie-eyed taking pictures of the storefront.

We also got to meet Candace (the founder) and her husband, Charles.  Candace is just adorable – complete with cute little converse tennies with her chef’s jacket.  Welcome to DC Sprinkles!!

A First Birthday!

EttasParty Oh what fun, our little Miss Etta Marie turned one!  This meant one thing – it was time to party!

Her soiree was a “Pizza, Pops & Playtime” theme and we put a ton of work into the details!  We decided to use two of Smock's wonderful papers from their Everday line which can be found at Haute Papier Leesburg.  The purple and red of the Flounce and Quadrille flat papers really captured the playful look we were going for.  We designed the invitations to include a hand-cut one and coordinating liner.

We used the four designs for paper decorations throughout the house.  Our favorite touch? The delicate sewn circle garland strung throughout.  Of course, the refreshments fit the theme.

Did you know there were so many foods with the word pop in them? Popcorn, pop rocks, pop chips, cake pops and the list goes on and on!  Overall it was a truly adorable event and fun was had by all. Happy Birthday to Etta Marie!
